Value Education
VALUE EDUCATION
In the present scenario whereas the explosion in the field of Science and Technology has raised the standard of living and comfort on one hand, on the other hand has threatened the very existence of human race on the earth, unless better and conscientious citizens are created through value oriented education, the fate of mankind of this globe is uncertain.
What are values?
Values are those ideal objects and preference that are universally 'Good' and desirable and are committed to what is right and true such as social, intellectual, cultural, moral, spiritual, etc.
In the country of Gandhi, Nehru and Tagore, there is no dearth of universally acclaimed values like Trust, Truth, Non-Violence, Tolerance, Co-operation, Brotherhood etc. And not this, our Indian Constitution is also committed to a number of sociopolitical values-secular, democratic and republic.
Inculcation of Values:
It is not possible to inculcate all kinds of values through process of formal education alone. The social environment around the institution and society where from the learners come, must also be favourable for inculcation of values .The personality and professional ideals of the teacher of the institution matter a lot. It may be imparted through direct as well as indirect method.
SHRI PRAKASH COMMITTEE suggested fixing one/two periods in school timetable for moral education. But it should be remembered that value education is not to be taught but sought. In school, we can inculcate values through formal and informal ways:
1.Morning Assembly.
2.Celebration of important days.
3.Arranging healthy debates and competitions.
4. Arranging life skill-drama/skits.
There is no fixed method for imparting value education. The teacher should adapt his own technique on basis of their life experiences in order to inculcate the essential values and moral training as these are basically into one's personality. I would like to conclude with these positive thoughts:
1. " It is better to light a candle rather than abusing the darkness.'
2. "Do unto others as you wish to do unto you.'
